A Word of Thanks From Kurt Mueller - British Property Federation

2009-10-18

Dear colleagues,                                                                                             Friday 17 07 2009

I want to quickly thank those of you that voted for the Empty Rates Campaign – the campaign against taxing vacant commercial space.

Thanks to you we won ‘Private Sector Campaign of the Year’ by Public Affairs News. Too bad we still have work to do since the Government insists that taxing a product with no demand will stimulate a market.

Thanks must also go to everyone that was involved in the campaign. The campaign would not have been possible without the support, involvement, help and partnership of many – the stories, EDMs, PQs, case studies, and, of course, the website (www.emptyrates.com).

Particular thanks goes to Linda Riordan MP (and Meryl Roberts!),  Chris Mullin MP,  Laura Sandys PPC,  Roger Gale MP,  Vince Cable MP, Boris and his team at the GLA,  John Nicholls of Leicester Regeneration,  Mike Whitby at Birmingham City Council,  Giles Barrie and Jenny Rigby at Property Week,  Sara Draper and Luke Jouanides from CBI,  Ed Cooke from BCSC and while he was at BRC with Tom Ironside,  Priyen Patel at the FSB,  Kevin Hoctor at the British Chambers of Commerce,  Mark Stephenson from North East Chambers of Commerce, Jonathan Refoy at ASDA,  Duncan Lamb and Steve Owen of Brixton, Francis Salway and Dominic Smith at Land Securities,  Kate Holgate at Brunswick,  Andy Rivett-Carnac and Nick Miller at Cantos,  David Flood of Rateable Value,  and of course those at BPF – Liz Peace, Peter Cosmetatos, Andrew Teacher, Kim Ward, Charlie Herring (now at Eversheds) and Emily Iwan – all of whom spent countless hours finding new stories of buildings being demolished or projects being shelved, calling various people and organisations for support, meeting the various Government officials and Ministers and backbench MPs. (Apologies to anyone I missed or anyone that my colleagues worked closely with but I didn’t.)

I hope everyone has a pleasant summer and I hope I see everyone soon.

 Yours,

Kurt
